October 2010

Working together

At Diabetes Australia – Vic, we collaborate with many affiliated health groups to keep you informed and engaged with the latest information, support services for type 1 diabetes.

To date, we have worked with men's health groups, hospitals, our type 1 peer support groups and researchers. The Coeliac Society will be involved in November's Diabetes Plus event, and in 2011 we will be working with JDRF to present a research symposium for people with type 1.

We think the type 1 community is a pretty switched on group. Our approach is to present you with as many options as we can and then leave it to you to decide where you will go for more information. It's for this reason that we promote and link to other, relevant diabetes sites. If you know of anything terrific out there in the type 1 world that we have missed, please let us know.

This month, we welcome Genevieve Dickson to the Type 1 Team. Gen is our new Events Officer and will be responsible for our Type 1 Out of Town and Type 1 in the City events. If you have any suggestions for either of these two series, you can email Gen at gdickson@diabetesvic.org.au

Enjoy this edition,

The Type 1 Team.

September saw Diabetes Camps Victoria (DCV) head to Mt Buller with 40 campers aged 12 to 14 years for our inaugural Senior Camp.

Campers spent four days skiing, making snowmen and enjoying other fantastic activities including a disco and movie night.

Campers were also provided with terrific diabetes education and information from our health professional and volunteer teams.

Click here to see what the campers got up to.

Application forms for our 2011 DCV Program have been sent out and are due back on 17 October. If you have not received your application in the mail, please contact Rachaele at rscarlett@diabetesvic.org.au or on 03 9667 1732.

Our T1 support groups are TOPS!

Due to recent changes at DA–Vic, the type 1 support groups are no longer part of the ComNet Program.

From this point forwards our groups will be referred to as The Type 1 Diabetes Peer Support Groups or TOPS Groups for short.

Many positive changes are in the pipelines, including a new resource to assist with day-to-day operations and more opportunities to collaborate with DA–Vic to support the type 1 community.

However, we know one thing won't change, and that is how brilliant our support groups are.  You really are TOPS!  For information about the TOPS Groups, go to the DA–Vic website.  For any queries, please contact Kim Henshaw , Type 1 Diabetes Support Group Coordinator at khenshaw@diabetesvic.org.au

Your chance to help someone who has helped you

If there is a health professional who has really helped you to manage your diabetes, why not nominate them for recognition at the DA–Vic World Diabetes Day celebration on 11 November. We know how hard it can be to manage your diabetes on your own and many health professionals play an important role in helping people to take control of their diabetes.

Contact Sue Hunt with your nomination by 25 October. Call 1300 136 588 to leave her a message or email shunt@diabetesvic.org.au

Diabetes blogosphere

Now that DA–Vic has its own blog, and Renza Scibilia, the T1 Team's Manager is enjoying sharing occasional musings (latest entry here), we thought we'd see what else is out there in the ever-expanding diabetes blogosphere.

The blogs we love are the ones that provide a personal perspective of living with type 1. They're not about the 'right and the wrong' of diabetes management. Instead, they are honest, real-life accounts of what diabetes is like.

So, make yourself a coffee, sit back and have a read of some of our favourites:

Six Until Me - Kerry Morrone Sparling's diabetes blog has been going since 2005.

Blogabetes - blogs on the dLife website

D and the Guy - an Australian bloke sharing his stories of living with type 1

Diabetes Mine - Witty, tell-it-as-it-is writing from a San Francisco-based writer

Dorkabetic - this site will appeal to the inner-geek in you!

Do you write a diabetes blog or know of a good one we haven't mentioned? Would you like to write a blog entry for the DA–Vic blog? Let us know at type1program@diabetesvic.org.au.

Are you my type?

Main Content Inline Small

This is the question asked by JDRF on an information postcard launched earlier this year. Have a look here to see the campaign.

We are big fans of anything and everything out there debunking diabetes myths and clearly defining the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

And if you're dealing with people who simply don't understand the finer (or even basic) details of type 1 diabetes give them one of our High and Low or Diabetes Essentials cards. Or call 1300 136 588 for hard copies.

Emotional side of diabetes

The Behavioural Diabetes Institute has released the second edition of The Emotional Side of Diabetes: 10 things you need to know.

This 24 page resource is full of information about living with the personal, social and behavioural aspects of diabetes.

Our favourite is tip number 10 - 'Taking a diabetes vacation' which offers advice on how to take a safe, planned and time-limited mini-break from the every day trials of diabetes.

You can download your copy here.
